Residents of Barangay Hawaiian in Silay City has turned into an improvised zipline to transport goods and connect to the city proper after massive floods that hit North Negros over the past 2 weekends and destroyed 2 bridges in the area.
According to village chief Henry Belleza, the steel bridge linking their community to its neighboring barangay, E Lopez, was destroyed during the new year’s flood. Last Friday, the hanging bridge in Malisbog was also destroyed by flood, leaving the community entirely inaccessible to typical modes of transport.
The City Engineering Office has already made its evaluation so that a proposal can be drawn up to reconnect the community, Belleza said.
At least 100 residents are currently depending on the improvised zipline for their mobility.
The improvised zipline was an initiative of Arnel Perez who formerly worked in Saudi Arabia as a rigger man.
