Former UNO-R President passes away

The University of Negros Occidental- Recoletos confirmed the passing of former university president, Fray Jose Antonio Rodrigalvarez, OAR.

Fr. Rodrigalvarez passed away at the age of  80 last January 16, 2021. He served UNO-R from 1965 -1994 in different capacities. He was UNO-R High School Principal from 1968 to 1994 and for three consecutive terms (1985-1988; 1988-1991;1991-1994) as University President.

Fr. Rodrigalvarez was born in Monteagudo de la Vicarias, Soria (Espana) on February 14, 1940, a statement from the university said. He received his simple profession in 1959 in Monteagudo. His solemn profession in 1962 and was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood on July 21, 1963 in Marcilla, Navarra, Spain.

He came to the Philippines in January of 1964 and was assigned to Seminario Mayor-Recoletos, Baguio City. In July of 1964, He was transferred to San Sebastian College-Recoletos in Manila. He was then assigned to Colegio de Santo Tomas de Villanueva-Recoletos, San Carlos City, Neg. Occ. on March 1965. And on June of 1965, He was transferred to the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos. From 1994 to 1999, he was assigned as Provincial Procurator of the Province of St. Nicholas of Tolentino. He was transferred to Colegio San Jose de Lodosa in Zaragoza in 1999. A year after, he was transferred to Union City, New Jersey. In 2009, he was Prior and parochial vicar of the Parish of St. Anselm, New York. Fr. Rorigalvarez retired to the community of San. Nicolas de Tolentino of Union City in 2015.

Fray Sergio Sanchez Moreno, OAR, Prior Provincial of the Province of San Nicolas de Tolentino, describes Fray Rodrigalvarez as “a peaceful and serene man, of few words but manifests very good judgment. His balanced personality was appreciated and enjoyed by his brothers and the people around him.”

A solemn Eucharistic celebration intended for the repose of the soul of Fr. Rodrigalvarez was held yesterday,, January 24, 2021 at the Oratory of St. Nicolas of Tolentine (UNO-R).
