Bacolod suspends first day of classes for public schools due to typhoon Goring

Acting Mayor El Cid Familiaran has ordered the suspension of classes at all levels in Bacolod City on Tuesday, August 29, due to inclement weather conditions brought by Typhoon Goring.

The Department of Education has set the opening of classes in public schools on Tuesday, but the local government of Bacolod was forced to cancel it, along with the suspension of work in government offices.

According to a statistics released by DepEd, over 1.5 million public school students in Region 6 are set to return to school on August 29.

Aside from Bacolod, classes across all levels were also suspended in Pulupandan, EB Magalona, Isabela, Moises Padilla, Bago City, La Carlota City, Valladolid, Don Salvador Benedicto, Murcia, Silay City, Talisay City, Ilog, Candoni, Escalante City, Calatrava, Candoni, Manapla, Cauayan, Hinoba-an, Victorias City and La Castellana.

Goring has not directly hit Negros Occidental and Bacolod City but heavy rains since Sunday evening was enhanced by the Southwest Monsoon. The weather bureau said rains will continue for the next 3 days.

At least 14 barangays in Bacolod were hit by flood affecting 1,772 families or a total of 6,178 members, Dr. Anna Maria Laarni M. Pornan, City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office head, reported at 6 p.m. Monday, August 28. Of which 6,048 sought shelter in evacuation centers.
