Bacolod to roll out COVID-19 vaccination this weekend

A number of frontliners from 2 medical facilities in Bacolod will be among the first to receive the initial shot of coronavirus vaccine this weekend.

City Administrator Em Ang confirmed that Bacolod will receive its first vials of COVID-19 vaccine this Sunday, making it the third city outside of Manila to avail of the Sinovac vaccine, along with Iloilo City.

A total of 16,000 vaccines were allocated by the Department of Health for Western Visayas, which will be shared by both Iloilo and Bacolod cities. As of posting time, no definite figures were made available yet on the exact number of vials that will be delivered to Bacolod.

Once the vaccines arrived, the city will start to inoculate medical workers from the 2 primary hospitals in Bacolod handling COVID-19 cases—- the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital and Riverside Medical Center.

Bacolod City Police Office Spokesperson Ma. Liberty Indiape said the local police had already drawn its plan in securing the vaccine deliveries once it arrived in Silay airport until it reaches the vaccine storage facility in the city.

Meanwhile, Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office Spokesperson PLt Abegael Donasco said that officers from the provincial headquarters are also expecting to get the first shot after receiving reports that their team was part of the identified group to receive the vaccine.

In case they will be part of the initial roll out of the vaccine, Donasco said their priority are the police officers serving as frontliners.

Last Sunday, a total of 600,000 Sinovac vaccines were delivered by China as part of their aid to the Philippines to curb the rising numbers of COVID-19 cases which have compelled the country to restrict non-essential movements for nearly a year now.
