Magnitude 5.2 earthquake jolts Negros

A magnitude of 5.2 earthquake struck Negros Occidental and surrounding areas at 8:33 AM today, May 17, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located at 09.89°N, 122.01°E, approximately 48 kilometers North 73° West of the City of Sipalay in Negros Occidental.

The quake had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.

PHIVOLCS reports indicate relatively weak instrumental intensities in several locations:

  • Intensity II (Weak): Anini’y, Antique; Argao City, Cebu; City of Iloilo; La Carlota City, Negros Occidental
  • Intensity I (Scarcely Perceptible): Culasi and San Jose City, Antique; City of Roxas, Capiz; Nueva Valencia, Guimaras; City of Passi, Iloilo

Residents in these areas may have felt a slight swaying or vibration.

As of this initial report, there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries.
