Several local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental have suspended classes on Monday, September 16, 2024, due to the expected heavy rainfall. The decision was made to prioritize the safety of students and school personnel amid the inclement weather.

A total of 24 LGUs in the province have cancelled classes, including Bacolod City, Silay City, Kabankalan City, and other municipalities. The suspension covers all levels of education, from preschool to senior high school.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has forecasted continued heavy to intense rain over Negros Occidental on Monday and Tuesday. This is attributed to the intensification of a low-pressure area outside the Philippine area of responsibility into a tropical depression.

While the tropical depression is not expected to directly affect any part of the country, its presence will contribute to the heavy rainfall. PAGASA has also predicted that the depression may intensify into a tropical storm in the coming days.

As of 11AM today, September 16, PAGASA issued a yellow rain fall warning in Kabankalan City, Ilog, Candoni, Hinoba-An, Sipalay City, Cauayan.
