A viral exanthem outbreak has affected 32 students at Negros Occidental High School (NOHS).
The contagious skin rash, often referred to locally as “makayha,” is associated with a viral infection and typically manifests as a red or pink rash that can cover large areas of the body. It may be accompanied by fever, headache, sore throat, and fatigue. The virus is highly contagious and can spread through saliva and contact with infected objects. To minimize the risk of infection, it is essential to practice good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing and wearing masks, especially in crowded places.
The outbreak at NOHS began in September and has since affected a number of students. The school administration and health officials are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary precautions to prevent further spread of the virus.
Dr. Sheila Blancia, NOHS Medical Officer III, advises parents to seek medical attention for children exhibiting symptoms of the virus. It is crucial for infected students to stay home to prevent further spread of the infection. To ensure continuity of learning, parents should inform their child’s teacher so that distance learning materials can be provided.
