Face-to-face classes in Bacolod City and several other areas in Negros Occidental for April 1&2 have been suspended due to a forecast of extreme heat.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) predicted heat index in Negros Occidental to reach dangerous levels, with highs of 41 degrees Celsius on Monday and 42 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. These readings fall under the “extreme caution” category.
As a precautionary measure, Bacolod City Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez announced the suspension of in-person classes for pre-school, elementary, secondary, and senior high school students via Facebook.
He encouraged schools to adopt alternative learning methods, such as online classes or modular learning, to ensure students’ continued education.
However, Benitez clarified that private schools with air-conditioned classrooms and universities can decide on continuing face-to-face classes at their discretion.
Similar measures were implemented in E.B. Magalona and Kabankalan City. Mayors Marvin Malacon and Benjie Miranda, respectively, ordered the suspension of classes in all public and private schools for both days.
Other towns and cities have not yet issued a similar advisory. The Department of Education in the province also have not announced the possible suspension of the opening of the provincial meet.
