Victorias City Mayor Javier Miguel “Javi” Benitez has engaged with the Philippine Sugar Research Institute Foundation Inc. (PHILSURIN) to explore sustainable solutions for sugarcane farming in Negros Occidental.
Benitez recently visited the Philippine Sugar Research Institute Foundation Inc (PHILSURIN) in Silay City where they tackled climate-resilient and fast-growing sugarcane varieties, including the PSR 03-171, a promising innovation designed to significantly enhance production. The PSR 03-171 variety is distinguished by its adaptability to diverse agro-climatic conditions, moderate drought tolerance, high yield potential, and rapid growth rate—crucial characteristics for mitigating the challenges of climate change.
Negros Occidental, with approximately 195,000 hectares dedicated to sugarcane cultivation, stands to benefit substantially from this new variety. PHILSURIN plans to implement PSR 03-171 across 58,000 hectares within the next three years, aiming to drive a significant increase in overall production.
To facilitate the widespread adoption of PSR 03-171, PHILSURIN is actively seeking partnerships with Benitez, the Victorias City government, and various farmers’ associations.
