A new P2 million watchtower and kayak center, funded by Seacology, has officially opened within the 366-hectare Lapus Lapus-Macapagao Local Conservation Area in Sagay City. This facility aims to boost eco-tourism and conservation efforts in the region.

The newly inaugurated watchtower is set to be a central point for kayak tours, offering visitors an ideal starting location to explore the extensive mangrove forests. Beyond tourism, it will also function as a vital monitoring station for biodiversity and wildlife, enabling better protection and understanding of the local ecosystem, a press release from the city stated.

According to Engr. Lawrence Dy of the City Engineering Office the structure stands 9.5 meters from the seabed and features a ground floor area of 41 sq. m. and a second floor of 18.50 sq. m. The watchtower is constructed from concrete and hardwood, with a long-span roof overlaid with cogon to maintain a natural aesthetic that blends with the environment.

Seacology field representative Ferdie Marcelo expressed his organization’s satisfaction with the collaboration, highlighting Sagay City’s efficient project implementation and strong local government support. He noted that Seacology’s mission of “protecting the unique habitats and cultures of islands worldwide” perfectly aligns with Sagay City’s goals for sustainable tourism and ecosystem conservation.

Mayo Antonio Cueva, Sagay City Environment Natural Resources Officer, emphasized the crucial role of the community in safeguarding this valuable ecosystem.

Punong Barangay Wilfredo Villacastin of Bulanon expressed his delight at the project’s beautiful outcome.

City Administrator Ryan Bonghanoy stressed the community’s commitment to maintaining the new structure, and Association President Joefel Relos extended gratitude to Seacology and its partners for making the project a reality.

Thie watchtower and kayak center marks Seacology’s second project in Sagay City. Their first initiative involved the repair and renovation of the Community Spa and Watchtower in Suyac Island Mangrove Ecopark.
