A pregnant nurse and her unborn child died in a horrific two-car collision Sunday night, June 1, on the National Highway in Purok Proper North, Barangay Taloc, Bago City.
Police identified the victim as Maria Angela Buendia, 36, married and a resident of Purok Proper North, Irrigation, Barangay Taloc.
According to Police Lieutenant Colonel Ariel Pico, OIC of the Bago City PNP, Buendia was on her way to duty at the Bago City Health Unit when the accident occurred at approximately 9:15 PM.
Thr victim was crossing the highway using the pedestrian lane when she was struck by a red Toyota Avanza. The force of the initial impact reportedly threw Buendia into the opposite lane, where she was then run over by an approaching Toyota Yaris. The victim was declared dead on arrival at Bago City Hospital.
Tragically, due to the impact from the second vehicle, Buendia’s six-month-old fetus was expelled from her womb and also died in the accident.
The Avanza, traveling from south to north, was driven by Philip Jansen Cantiller, 30, of Deca Homes Subdivision, Barangay Cabug, Bacolod City. Meanwhile, the Yaris, traveling from north to north, was driven by Salvador Castro, 59, of Purok Aure, Barangay Crossing Pulupandan, Pulupandan.
Both Cantiller and Castro are currently detained at the custodial facility of the Bago PNP.
