The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has issued a lahar advisory for areas surrounding Mount Kanlaon, warning of potential lahar flows due to heavy rainfall.
The agency warns that prolonged and heavy rainfall may trigger lahars along major channels draining the volcano, particularly in the Tamburong Creek and Talaptapan Creek areas. These lahars could be similar to the destructive flows that occurred on June 5, 2024, it added.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has forecast heavy to intense rainfall over several areas in the Visayas, including Negros Island, in the coming days. This increased rainfall, combined with loose volcanic materials, could exacerbate the risk of lahars.
PHIVOLCS strongly urges communities in areas prone to lahar hazards to remain vigilant and be prepared to evacuate if necessary. Local government units and emergency response teams are advised to activate their contingency plans and coordinate closely with PHIVOLCS.
