The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has announced a ban on high-capacity power banks on all flights, after recent incidents of aircraft fires suspected to be caused by overheating lithium-ion batteries in these portable devices.

According to an advisory released by CAAP on March 9, power banks exceeding 160 watt-hours (Wh) are now strictly prohibited on board aircraft. These devices, classified as high-capacity portable lithium-ion batteries, pose a significant fire hazard.

Passengers are still permitted to carry power banks, provided they are rated below 100 Wh. Power banks with capacities between 100 Wh and 160 Wh may be allowed, but only with prior approval from the respective airline.

CAAP emphasized that all power banks, regardless of capacity, are strictly prohibited in checked-in luggage due to the inherent fire risk. The agency urges passengers to adhere to these new regulations to ensure the safety of all those on board.
