The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced that the Visayas grid will be placed on yellow alert today, April 16.

In a statement NGCP said a yellow alert will be in effect from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

This yellow alert is caused by insufficient operating margin due to several power plants being on unscheduled shutdown or operating on derated capacities, the NGCP explained.

Currently 12 power plants in the Visayas are  unavailable, and five others are generating less electricity than usual. This results in a total of 676.5 megawatts (MW) of unavailable power for the grid, according to NGCP.

A yellow alert indicates that the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement. It does not necessarily mean there will be power outages, but it serves as a warning that the power supply is tight, NGCP underscore.
