The Negros Electric Power Corporation (NEPC) has successfully restored power to 48,000 consumers in Bacolod City after a transformer failure on August 21.

In an advisory, NEPC said power for Alijis Feeders 1 & 3 were fully restored at 9:53am yesterday, August 26.

NEPC Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Reynaldo Castro, said that the company took a calculated risk to expedite the restoration process, prioritizing the immediate needs of the affected consumers.

“We understand the inconvenience this incident has caused, and we are committed to making things right,” Castro said. “Please give us time to implement necessary improvements.”

The failure of the 13-year-old power transformer accelerated the rehabilitation of the Alijis Substation, a crucial step in ensuring reliable power supply.

But aside from Alijis substation, 6 other substations previously owned by Central Negros Electric Cooperative (CENECO) are already in critical status. These substations are nearing or exceeding their standard operating thresholds, according to Castro.

NEPC plans to prioritize the rehabilitation of these substations once its P2 billion 5-year development plan for Central Negros is fully implemented.

NEPC has took over the operations of the Central Negros Electric Cooperative (CENECO) early this month following an approval of its franchise to operate. The partnership between NEPC and CENECO, through a Joint Venture Agreement, aims to address the financial challenges of rehabilitating and modernizing the electric distribution assets.
