Negros Island is on high alert as Kanlaon Volcano continues to exhibit signs of increasing unrest following a surge in volcanic earthquakes and sulfur dioxide emissions, raising concerns about a potential magmatic eruption.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has reported on Wednesday, September 11, that Kanlaon Volcano experienced 337 volcanic earthquakes, a significant increase from the 288 reported on Tuesday. Additionally, the sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas emission reached its highest level yet, reaching 11,556 tons.
The Phivolcs has maintained Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) over Kanlaon, warning that current conditions may escalate to eruptive unrest and a subsequent increase in the alert level. Local government units and communities near the volcano have been advised to be prepared for a possible eruption.
Several municipalities in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental have taken precautionary measures, including the suspension of classes in La Carlota City, La Castellana, and Canlaon City. The local governments have urged residents to be vigilant and ready to evacuate if necessary.
Phivolcs has also expressed concerns about the health risks posed by the increased sulfur dioxide emissions. Prolonged exposure to volcanic SO2 can cause irritation of the eyes, throat, and respiratory tract, particularly for individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as asthma, lung disease, and heart disease.
As the situation continues to evolve, residents in the affected areas are advised to closely monitor updates from Phivolcs and local authorities.
