In a significant boost to consumer confidence, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has recognized 28 business establishments in Negros Occidental for their exemplary commitment to upholding consumer rights and welfare.
This marks a substantial increase in certified businesses under the DTI’s prestigious “Bagwis” program.
The newly certified establishments join 50 previously recognized firms, bringing the total number of Bagwis awardees in the province to an impressive 78. The certification which is valid for three years, underscore the growing emphasis on ethical business practices and consumer protection within the region.
According to data released by the DTI seven new businesses have earned the Bagwis certification, while 21 existing awardees have successfully maintained their status. This, combined with the 2022 and 2023 awardees, signifies a consistent and sustained effort by local businesses to prioritize consumer welfare.
“A heartfelt thank you to all businesses committed to excellence,” stated DTI-Negros Occidental in a press release. “We look forward to seeing you maintain this recognition for the next three years.”
The Bagwis Program, designed to incentivize businesses to adhere to fair trade laws and implement robust consumer protection measures, awards certifications at three levels: Gold, Silver, and Bronze. This comprehensive framework covers a wide range of retail establishments, including supermarkets, department stores, appliance centers, hardware stores, and DTI-accredited service and repair shops.
Among the latest recipients, 14 businesses achieved the coveted Gold Level, demonstrating adherence to ISO 9001 quality management system standards in addition to meeting the stringent requirements of the Bronze and Silver levels. Notable Gold awardees include major retailers such as Puregold-La Castellana, Metro Supermarket-Ayala Capitol Central, and Toyota Negros Occidental-Service Center.
Twelve businesses were awarded the Silver Level, signifying their commitment to social responsibility initiatives alongside compliance with fair trade laws. These include Prince Hypermart-Talisay and various Savemore Market branches.
