A shallow earthquake measuring 2.4 on the Richter scale struck Negros Occidental province on Tuesday night, February 6, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The tremor occurred at 9:06 PM Philippine Standard Time (PST) with an epicenter located 020 kilometers south 31° east of Murcia, Negros Occidental.
Its shallow depth of only 1 kilometer suggests it was near the surface, which may have caused tremors to be felt more strongly in nearby areas.
While the earthquake was relatively weak, residents in Murcia and surrounding towns may have felt slight shaking or trembling. PHIVOLCS assures the public that there is no threat of aftershocks powerful enough to cause damage.
