The severe tropical storm Kristine brought damage to Negros Occidental on Thursday, October 24 as strong winds and heavy rains caused widespread flooding, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted transportation and education.
The storm affected 1,906 families, or 6,797 individuals, across 80 barangays in various municipalities and cities. Over 900 families sought refuge in evacuation centers.
At least seven houses destroyed and 22 damaged by strong winds. Landslides affected five areas, but were cleared by authorities. Two damaged bridges were deemed passable for light vehicles.
The agricultural sector also suffered losses, with damages to crops, fisheries, and livestock estimated at P3.998 million.
The storm also resulted in the suspension of sea travel between Bacolod and Iloilo, as well as between Sagay and Bantayan. Several Cebu Pacific flights were also canceled due to inclement weather.
A total of 23 local government units (LGUs) suspended classes on Thursday. Many of these LGUs, including Bacolod City, Talisay City, Silay City, and others, extended the class suspensions to Friday.
In Negros Oriental, two separate drowning incidents occurred in Mabinay and Pamplona towns at the height of the storm.
Lt. Stephen Polinar, spokesperson for the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NOPPO) said a person was rescued from the swollen Tabuay River in Sitio Nalimbagan, Barangay Lumbangan in Mabinay town, However, two individuals remain missing in Sitio Hakuton, Barangay Mamburao, Pamplona.
