The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed a significant explosive eruption at the summit vent of Kanlaon Volcano at 5:51 AM today, April 8.

The eruption has produced a massive, bent plume of ash and volcanic material, reaching an estimated height of 4,000 meters, an initial advisory from PHIVOLCS said.
According to PHIVOLCS the plume is currently drifting southwest and the volcano remains on Alert Level 3.
Thermal camera and instrumental monitoring have also detected pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) descending the southern slopes of the volcano, it added. PDCs are fast-moving flows of hot gas and volcanic matter that can be extremely dangerous.
PHIVOLCS continues to monitor Kanlaon Volcano closely and will provide updates as the situation evolves.
