The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology confirmed an ongoing eruption of Kanlaon volcano producing 5,000 meter plume.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in an SMS advisory said a steam-driven or phreatic eruption occured at Kanlaon Volcano, which started at 6:51 PM.
The eruption that lasted for 6 minutes was preceded by a relatively strong volcano-tectonic earthquake and has led to reports of coarse ashfall and sulfurous odors in communities on the western slopes, according to PHIVOLCS.
In a separate advisory, the city DRRM of San Carlos advised all residents of San Carlos City to wear face masks and stay indoors.
The local DRRM said ashfall may reach San Carlos City proper due to southeast to southwest wind direction.
As of 9PM, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Canlaon City has activated the Incident Command System (ICS) to ensure the safety and preparedness of the community.
Mayor Jose Chubasco B. Cardenas of Canlaon addressed the public in a brief statement, emphasizing the importance of coordinated efforts and the readiness of the city’s emergency response teams.
“Our priority is the safety and well-being of our residents,” he stressed as he urged everyone to remain calm, follow official advisories, and cooperate with response teams.
This is a developing story.
