Kanlaon eruption wreaks havoc on Bago’s agri

The recent eruption of Kanlaon volcano has left a significant blow to Bago City’s agriculture sector, with estimated losses amounting to nearly P5.6 million.

According to the City Agriculturist’s Office, around 175 farmers across 118.27 hectares of farmland have been affected.

IThe high-value crops sector, including vegetables and fruits, suffered the most substantial damage, with losses estimated at P3.72 million, it said.

Meanwhile, the rice sector followed closely, with losses reaching P1.72 million, affecting 139 farmers and 90.42 hectares. The corn sector also incurred losses of P153,352.50.

City Agriculturist-Designate Marvin John Blance has assured farmers that the city government is implementing various rehabilitation measures to help them recover. The city has stockpiled organic fertilizers, vegetable seeds, and planting materials for coffee, banana, and cacao to aid farmers in replanting their crops.
