The number of individuals displaced by the ongoing unrest at Mount Kanlaon continues to rise, with over 46,000 people affected as of today, January 6, the Office of the Civil Defense said.
OCD said that Alert Level 3 remains in effect, indicating that the volcano is currently experiencing increased unrest and that a hazardous eruption remains possible within weeks or even days.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) detected significant degassing from the volcano on January 4, prompting an Emergency Alert Warning Message. This heightened activity has led to a surge in the number of evacuees, with 12,223 families (46,781 individuals) now displaced across Regions VI and VII.
The eruption has had a significant impact on the local economy, with the agricultural sector suffering substantial losses estimated at ₱33.55 million in Region VI. A state of calamity has been declared in 34 cities and municipalities across Negros Occidental to facilitate the swift disbursement of emergency funds and resources.
To ensure the safety of residents, class suspensions have been implemented across 17 cities and municipalities in the affected regions, with work suspensions also in effect in two areas.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and follow the advice of local officials. The situation remains fluid, and the OCD emphasizes the importance of continued support from government agencies, NGOs, and the public to assist those affected by the eruption.
While relief efforts are ongoing, with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) leading the distribution of food and non-food items, urgent needs remain in affected areas. Canlaon City, in particular, requires patient transport vehicles, portable toilets, and essential relief supplies.
