The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has detected sustained signs of volcanic unrest at Kanlaon Volcano, raising concerns about a possible eruption.

In its 3:30PM advisory released today, July 2, scientists from PHIVOLCS noted a high sulfur emission that reached at 5,083 tonnes/day, the second highest ever recorded for Kanlaon.

While the elevated gas levels have recorded all year, the SO2 emissions only average at 3,254 tonnes/day since the June 3 eruption. This is significantly higher than the pre-eruption average of 1,273 tonnes/day.

PHIVOLCS also noticed consistent earthquake activities at an average of 10 events per day.

According to PHIVOLCS ground deformation data suggests an ongoing inflation (swelling) of the volcano’s edifice, indicating magma buildup.

Kanlaon remains under Alert Level 2 (Increasing Unrest).

The public is strictly advised to avoid entering the 4-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) surrounding the crater.
