Former Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia is rumored to be appointed as an undersecretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), several sources said.

As the ban for losing candidates from the 2022 elections is set to expire, speculation about Leonardia’s appointment has grown louder.

Leonardia, who served as the longest mayor of Bacolod, lost to incumbent mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez in the last elections.

This news outlet tried to reach Leonardia for confirmation, but as of posting time, the former Bacolod mayor did not reply to a text message for comment. This story will be updated once Leonardia sends his reply.

It can be recalled that the former mayor supported Vice President Sara Duterte, who currently heads the DepEd, in the previous elections.

Yulo as SRA chief?
As rumors continue to swirl about Leonardia’s possible appointment, fifth district Congressman Emilio Yulo III has denied that he is being considered to head the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA), which was recently vacated.

Yulo said that no offer has been made to him, and he does not foresee receiving one.

He added that his primary mandate is to serve the people of the 5th District of Negros Occidental, but he can still assist the sugar industry as a representative.

SRA Chief David Thaddeus Alba resigned from his post after holding it for only seven months, citing health reasons.
