A significant increase in dengue cases has been reported in Negros Occidental, with 5,338 cases recorded as of October 26, 2024.
This figure represents a staggering 313.16% increase compared to the same period last year, when only 1,292 cases were reported based on the comparative report released by the Provincial Health Office.
Bago City has emerged as the hotspot for dengue infections, with 602 cases. Other cities and municipalities with high caseloads include San Carlos, Hinoba-an, Sagay, Talisay, Kabankalan, Silay, Cauayan, Cadiz, and Sipalay.
Meanwhile, 15 dengue-related deaths have been reported this year, occurring in Sagay, Talisay, Kabankalan, Silay, Cadiz, and Sipalay.
Dr. Girlie Pinongan, head of the PHO, noted that while the number of cases in October has decreased compared to August, the ongoing rainy season continues to provide ideal breeding conditions for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
The PHO is urging the public to maintain clean surroundings and take preventive measures to combat the spread of the disease.
