The provincial government of Negros Occidental is validating the reported COVID-19 Lambda variant in the province.

Capitol through Provincial Administrator Atty. Rayfrando Diaz said the Provincial Health Office (PHO), Department of Health (DOH), and the Philippine Genome Center are currently conducting a probe on one of the COVID-positive patients in the province who is currently being suspected as the country’s 1st case of the Lambda variant.

Based on information provided the patient is a 35-year-old female from the town of Valladolid and has no travel history.

But the DOH said in a statement that case is currently being validated as to whether she is a local or ROF case. The patient was asymptomatic and tagged as Recovered after undergoing the 10-day isolation period. The DOH is currently conducting back tracing and case investigation.

According to Diaz it is a “peculiar case” considering that there are no notable circumstances for a patient to have acquired the said variant. Based on the provincial government contact tracing, close contacts, including those in her household, tested negative for COVID-19.
