The provincial government of Negros Occidental, led by Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, has voiced support for the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) plan to privatize the operations of the Bacolod-Silay Airport.

However, Lacson emphasized that the privatization should be undertaken by an entity that is capable and committed.

He stressed that the the success of such a venture hinges on selecting “the right partner — one that is committed to public service, long-term sustainability, and development.”

He underscored that for a fast-growing province like Negros Occidental, a modern, efficient, and world-class airport is essential to our economic development, tourism growth, and overall connectivity.

Bacolod Mayor and Representative-elect Alfredo Abelardo Benitez echoed similar sentiments, welcoming the privatization “if facilities and services will be improved.”

The DOTr has previously announced its commitment to privatize the operations and maintenance of ten more regional airports, including Bacolod-Silay Airport, by 2028. This initiative aims to enhance infrastructure and services through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) schemes.

At present, the government is working on improving the passenger lounge and the arrival area of Bacolod-Silay Airport.
