A dedicated public school principal lost his life while going the extra mile to clean up his school in Moises Padilla town as part of the Brigada Eskwela program, a multi-stakeholder school maintenance program of the Department of Education to ensure that public schools are ready in time for the class opening.

Reynaldo Mojares, 60, the principal of Guinpana-an Elementary School, tragically fell from the roof of the school building on Sunday, July 28. He succumbed to his injuries at Riverside Medical Center in Bacolod City on Wednesday morning, July 31.

According to Ian Arnold Arnaiz, Department of Education (DepEd) Negros Occidental public information officer, Mojares climbed the roof of a building using a ladder because he saw remaining leaves. He cleaned the roof, but when he was descending, the ladder slid, causing him to fall.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and DepEd. Mojares was known for his dedication to his students and was set to retire in December or January.

“It’s a heartbreaking loss,” said Rep. Emilio Yulo III, expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy. “This incident highlights the challenges our teachers face in ensuring our children’s education.”

Social media has been flooded with tributes to the beloved principal, with colleagues and students sharing heartfelt messages of condolence and admiration.
