A significant portion of Bacolod City’s population, especially Brgy. Estefania, is at risk of being affected by ashfall should Kanlaon volcano experience a major eruption.
During a meeting of the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (BCDRRMC) on Thursday, January 9, it was revealed that Brgy. Estefania has the highest number of residents identified as vulnerable to the hazards of volcanic ashfall.
With a population of 42,341, the barangay is home to a large number of children, elderly, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women who would be particularly susceptible to the health risks associated with volcanic ash exposure.
Dr. Anna Maria Laarni-Pornan, head of the CDRRMO, emphasized that the actual extent of ashfall in Bacolod would largely depend on the prevailing wind direction.
The council has formed five clusters to address various aspects of disaster response, including health, logistics, and law enforcement.
Also at risk are residents of Mansilingan (27,526), Taculing (26,486), Handumanan (25,921),Pahanocoy (21,654),Villamonte (18,297),Alijis (17,713),Banago (14,051),Cabug (10,724), and Singcang – Airport (10,117).
The city government has already prepared two evacuation centers in anticipation of a mass displacement of residents.
