The Barangay 1 of Bacolod City has been shortlisted for the 2025 Galing Pook Awards: Search for the Ten Outstanding Barangay Initiatives, according to the Department of Interior and Local Government-Bacolod.
The recognition is for the barangay’s innovative program, “From HAPAG to Hapag-Kainan: From Garden Beds to Dining Tables – Bridging Hunger with Harvest and Hope,” an initiative that transforms neglected urban spaces into sustainable food sources.
The Galing Pook Foundation National Selection Committee (NSC) conducted an onsite validation of the project on October 23, 2025. The NSC team included former Negros Occidental Governor Lito Coscolluela, Mr. Vincent Lazatin of Bantay Kita, and Ms. Monette Montemayor from the Galing Pook Foundation.
Punong Barangay Cesar B. Rellos, Jr. shared the inspiring journey of the project, detailing how a once-neglected, garbage-filled area near the river and coast was meticulously transformed into a thriving community garden.
Through active collaboration with the City Agriculture Office, local NGOs, and residents, the green space has blossomed into a source of free, healthy produce for fisherfolk families and daycare children. The initiative effectively promotes urban farming and sustainable living within the community.
Executive Assistant April Rose Mayo, who represented Bacolod Mayor Greg Gasataya emphasized that being shortlisted is both an honor for Bacolod City and a testament to the community’s collective spirit and resilience. They highlighted that the initiative brilliantly showcases the creativity and compassion of Bacolodnons, transforming challenges into opportunities for growth, nourishment, and unity.
DILG Bacolod City Director Christian M. Nagaynay underscored that the recognition is a reflection of not only good governance but also genuine bayanihan—a shared vision of hope, sustainability, and community empowerment.
The final winners for the 2025 Galing Pook Awards will be announced later this year.
