As part of its mitigating measure against flooding, the Bacolod City government has removed nearly 45 tons of silt from the Banago River.

According to the city approximately 44.8 tons, or 32 cubic meters, of sediment were extracted from the waterway.

The extensive desilting and clearing operation was initiated under the direct orders of Mayor Greg Gasataya, as part of the city’s broader strategy to minimize the risk and impact of flooding.

It can be recalled that a torrential monsoon rains submerged streets and homes in Bacolod and Talisay cities on July 11, displacing more than 18,000 people.

The almost four-hour downpour back then had caused sections of streets to disappeared under floodwaters, and homes, from modest dwellings to larger residences, were inundated.
