Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya met with officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and Almana Construction and Development Corporation on August 26, to finalize plans for accelerating the completion of the city’s ₱152 million diversion channel.

The meeting focused on making the diversion channel, located along Burgos Street in the reclamation area, operational by the end of the year.

The project, which began in 2023, is designed to mitigate flooding in the city.

During the joint conference, key agreements were made to expedite the project. Gasataya confirmed that design and equipment issues have been resolved, allowing inlet works to begin on August 27 at Mambuloc Creek. This will help manage water flow and reduce flood risks during construction.

The city government also committed to providing a flap gate and a sluice gate to prevent seawater backflow, which are expected to be delivered within three months.

The DPWH has already created a detailed engineering plan for the coastline outfall, which will be implemented by Almana Construction. The inlet is projected to be finished in two months, with the gates to be installed immediately upon arrival.

“On our part, the most important thing is to open and operationalize the channel at the soonest possible time because people have long been waiting for this project to be functional,” Gasataya stated. He added that the clear timetable will ensure progress and eliminate any confusion.
