In a major breakthrough in the investigation into the killing of Gov. Roel Degamo of Negros Oriental, authorities announced on Sunday, March 5, the apprehension of the 4 suspects responsible for the heinous crime, with another suspect killed.
According to authorities, one suspect believed to be involved was shot and killed on Saturday night after reportedly exchanging gunfire with law enforcement. Another suspect was apprehended on Sunday morning.
The unidentified suspect was shot and killed by a joint team comprising of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Philippine Army. As of the latest report, the suspect’s identity remains unknown.
Authorities identified those who were arrested as taxi driver Osmundo Rivero from Zamboanga City, well as Joric Labrador (50), Joven Aber (42), and Benjie Rodriguez (45).
According to Col. Gerard Pelare, spokesperson for the Central Visayas police, at least 10 individuals are believed to have been involved in the assassination plot.
The manhunt operations for the remaining suspects are still on going and Pelare said that all ports and exit points in the province have been secured, making it impossible for any of the other suspects to leave.
Degamo who was attending to concerns of his constituents was shot and killed by the armed who entered his residence in Pamplona town on Saturday, March 4.
Aside from Degamo, nine others were also killed and 17 others were wounded.
As the investigation continues, the government and law enforcement agencies have vowed to spare no effort in their pursuit of justice for the victims and their families. It is hoped that the perpetrators of this senseless act of violence will be swiftly brought to justice, and that the people of Negros Oriental will be able to find closure and healing in the aftermath of this tragedy.
