Agricultural damage across Negros Occidental, primarily caused by heavy rains and weather disturbances from September 16 to 27, has now exceeded P6.3 million, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) reported on Tuesday, September 30.
In a report submitted to Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, the OPA noted that the majority of the losses were sustained by the vital rice sector.
Total damage to rice caused by Typhoons Mirasol, Nando, and Opong, along with the lingering effects of the southwest monsoon, amounted to P6,117,219.
This extensive loss affected 351 rice farmers across nine local government units (LGUs), including San Carlos City, Salvador Benedicto, Calatrava, Cadiz City, Silay City, Isabela, Moises Padilla, and Sipalay City.
In addition to crop losses, the OPA reported a damage cost of P182,000 to the provincial fisheries sector.
The Provincial Veterinary Office also contributed to the overall assessment, placing the loss of farm animals due to the weather disturbances at P21,000.
The total agricultural and livestock damage now stands at over P6.3 million, prompting local officials to assess relief and recovery efforts for the affected farmers and fisherfolk.
